JAY HAIDE À L'ANCIENNE

Jay Haide (pronounced Hi-duh) is the brand name of a line of violins, violas, cellos, and basses, and the product of a longtime collaboration between Jay Ifshin and his shop foreman Haide Lin.  The Jay Haide instruments, made at the company’s Chinese workshop, are modeled on such historic makers as Stradivari, Guarneri, and Guadagnini; for violas, Maggini.  The Jay Haide a l’ancienne have patterned their workshop after big French workshops from the 1920s, such shops as Jerome Thibouville-Lamy.  They did not have just one maker; rather, there was division of labor. While one artisan specializes exclusively in arching, another spends his time doing rib bending. You get the best fellow who can do arching. That’s all he does all day long. You train someone how to do rib bending and that’s all he does. The makers who carve scrolls can cut three, four, or even five scrolls a day. Combine those skills in their workshop and the result is a fine instrument.  (4/4 - 1/4)
